Court dismisses lawsuit against #EndBadGovernance protest organizers

The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Thursday, dismissed a lawsuit filed against the organisers of the #EndBadGovernance protests, which took place across Nigeria earlier this month.

The lawsuit filed by 17 citizens opposing the protests alleges that the demonstrations violate their rights. The plaintiffs, who represent various parts of Nigeria, have asked for an order compelling security agencies to disperse the protests.

However, in a surprise move, Judge Peter Lifu dismissed the case on Thursday due to the plaintiff’s absence from the hearing. The judge expressed frustration and surprise that neither the plaintiff nor the defendant were present in court, concluding that the plaintiff was no longer interested in pursuing the case.

The protests, which began on August 1, were held to protest economic hardship caused by President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies. The plaintiffs argued that the demonstrations violated their fundamental rights, including freedom of movement, human dignity and national security.

In particular, the judge had previously dismissed an ex parte application filed by the plaintiffs, ruling that the application was without merit and that there was no evidence to suggest that the protesters intended to continue their activities.

The dismissal of the lawsuit was seen as a victory for the organizers of the #EndBadGovernance protests, including Omoyele Sowore, who led the Take It Back Movement. The development also underscores the importance of careful prosecution in the legal process.
