COVID-19: 775 million cases reported since start – WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) said Tuesday at least 775 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported globally since the pandemic began in 2019.

The United Nations health agency disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

He added that more than seven million deaths have been reported worldwide in the last four years.

The first official case of COVID-19 was recorded on December 31, 2019, when WHO was notified of cases of pneumonia in Wuhan, China.

The statement read: “Globally, over the 28-day period (June 24 to July 21), the number of new cases and deaths increased by 30 percent and 26 percent, respectively.

“Compared to the previous 28-day period (May 27 to June 23), with more than 186,000 new cases reported in 96 (41 percent) countries and more than 2,800 new deaths reported in 35 (15 percent) countries.

“As of July 21, 2024, more than 775 million confirmed cases and over seven million deaths have been reported globally since the start of the pandemic.

“During the same period, 46 and 35 countries provided data at least once on hospitalizations and admissions of COVID-19 patients to intensive care units (ICUs), respectively.

“From the available data, more than 23,000 new hospitalizations and more than 600 new ICU admissions were reported.

“Among countries that reported these data consistently over the current and previous reporting periods, there was an overall increase of 11 percent and 3 percent in the number of new hospitalizations and new ICU admissions, respectively.

“Globally, 9.8 million people have received a COVID-19 vaccine dose in the 73 reporting Member States (MS), covering 22 per cent of the global population.

“Among older adults, 4.9 million people received one dose in the 60 MS who reported acceptance in that group, which corresponds to an acceptance rate of 0.42 percent so far in 2024.”
