Death in University of Ibadan swimming pool: Oyo police launch murder probe

The Oyo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a teenager whose body was discovered in a swimming pool at the University of Ibadan

The development was confirmed in a statement issued in Ibadan by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka.

According to police, the body was first spotted floating in the pool in the early hours of Thursday. Information made available by the university’s head of security indicated that the victim was believed to be between 14 and 15 years old.

Police detectives reportedly visited the scene shortly after receiving the complaint and started preliminary investigations into the incident.

From the initial investigations, according to the command, it emerged that the deceased had blood coming from the mouth and nose, while slight bruises were observed in the nose area.

Investigators also found objects believed to belong to the teenager near the pool, including a t-shirt and a pair of shoes.

Bloodstains were reportedly noticed in the pavilion area near the scene, raising further suspicions about the circumstances of the death.

The body was later taken to the General Hospital, Adeoyo, Ibadan, where medical staff confirmed the victim dead on arrival. It has since been deposited in the morgue.

Police said the case is being treated as a suspected homicide while a thorough investigation continues to determine exactly what happened.

The command appealed to residents and the general public to remain calm and avoid circulating unverified claims while investigators work to uncover the facts.

The incident has attracted attention in Ibadan and across Oyo State, and authorities are expected to provide further updates as investigations progress.
