Ebola: US tells Nigerian citizens what to do

The United States Mission in Nigeria issued a health advisory on Wednesday for American citizens residing or traveling in the country.

The warning follows a reported case of Bundibugyo virus disease, a rare and serious strain of Ebola.

In a statement posted on its official X account, the US Mission urged citizens and travelers to consult the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website for updated travel guidance on Ebola.

It also said that people who suspect exposure or show signs of the virus have been advised to seek medical attention immediately.

“If you are at risk for Ebola, notify your doctor if you experience symptoms consistent with Ebola for guidance before presenting for treatment,” the advisory states.

He cautioned travelers to continue taking malaria prophylaxis as prescribed, warning that malaria symptoms can mimic those of Ebola and trigger unnecessary health alerts.

“Continue taking malaria prophylaxis as recommended by your doctor. “Symptoms of malaria can mimic the symptoms of Ebola, leading to preventable health problems.”

Travelers returning from areas affected by Ebola outbreaks have been advised to monitor their health for 21 days.

The US Embassy also encouraged citizens to review general health advice on Nigeria’s official national portal, consult the list of medical providers, and check with travel insurance companies for medical evacuation options.

Nigeria confirmed a case of the disease on October 20, making it the fifth country to detect the virus since an epidemic was declared in the Democratic Republic of Congo on May 15, 2026
