Egg remains the cheapest protein source – PAN

Brown Eggs

The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), FCT chapter, has described eggs as one of the cheapest and most complete sources of protein, providing 12-13% of daily human nutritional requirements.

The association stated this on Friday in Abuja during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the occasion of the World Egg Day 2025, themed Mighty Egg: Rich in natural nutrition.

World Egg Day is celebrated every year on the second Friday of October. It was founded in 1996 by the International Egg Commission (IEC) to promote eggs as an affordable, high-quality food.

Speaking on the topic, the PAN FCT Auditor and Managing Director of Yemi Integrated Farms, Mrs. Yemi Egwudale, said eggs costing between N150 and N250 constitute a complete diet suitable for all ages.

Egwudale said eating two eggs a day provides a quarter of the body’s protein needs, adding that such nutritional value is difficult to match in many other common foods.

He called on the government to revive the school feeding program and ensure that every pupil consumes at least one egg a day due to its high nutritional content and affordability.

“The egg contains protein, carbohydrates, fats and healthy cholesterol. One or two eggs a day provides your child with a completely nutritious diet for learning and development,” she said.

He urged government authorities to make daily egg consumption a mandatory part of school meals, given its broad nutritional benefits for growing children.
