Empty roads while Lagos stages the LG elections

The state of Lagos underwent an unusual calm on Saturday while the roads remained largely empty and the companies were closed due to the elections of the local government in progress in its 20 areas of the local government (LGA) and 37 areas of development of the local council (LCDA).

The restrictions on the movement, initially foreseen to start at 3:00 in the morning, were subsequently adequate to run from 6:00 to 15:00 of the directive, issued to guarantee a regular and safe vote process, applied both to the transport of vehicles and to the navigable one, with exceptions granted for essential services.

The presence on safety was visibly accentuated, with important roads throughout the state manned by the police checkpoints. The officers of the rapid response team (RS), anti-crops and anti-terrorism unit were among over 20,000 people lined up to maintain order in various electoral centers.

In an attempt to curb the bad electoral conduct, the authorities have prohibited the use of armed escorts, sirens and vehicles with covered plates near the polling and collection centers. The offenders, the officials warned, would have had to face an immediate arrest.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-El Olusola, in a declaration issued on Friday, invited the residents to actively and peacefully engage in the elections, highlighting the fundamental role of local governments in the basic development and in the provision of services.

“This election offers Lagosiani the opportunity to model the leadership of their local advice by voting for presidents and councilors who will represent their interests and guide the development at the community level,” said the governor.

Describing the vote as a vital civil liability, Sanwo-Elimo has ensured a credible and safe electoral process to the public. He said that the independent electoral commission of the State of Lagos (Lasiec) is fully prepared to conduct the polls effectively.

The governor also invited the interested parties to maintain the decorum, equity and adhesion to electoral guidelines. He made a special appeal to young people, exhorting them to act as peace agents and avoid any form of violence or negligence.

“Lagos will continue to establish the rhythm of democratic development,” said Sanwo-Olu, expressing confidence in a peaceful and transparent exercise.

He concluded with a request for collecting unity and civic commitment: “We once again show the world that Lagos represents peace, progress and participatory governance”.
