“Expect more protests,” Sowore challenges Nigerian government after being arrested by Immigration

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 presidential election, Omoyele Sowore, on Sunday, told the Federal Government to expect more protests despite recent attempts to suppress dissenting voices in the country.

This follows his arrest by officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, on Sunday.

He was then released by Immigration a few hours later.

Sowore, who later appeared on an interview programme on Arise TV on Sunday night, confirmed that the “FearlessInOctober” protest planned to start on October 1 and other demonstrations would go ahead.

He said the protests were organised by Nigerians against the “oppressive” government of President Bola Tinubu.

The activist said: “We started on August 1, which was part of the ‘End Bad Governance’ protest. It was supposed to be a continuation.

“There are 15 demands that the government has not even responded to. Instead, the Federal Government has arrested and detained many people. They have charged them with false offences, very outrageous treason offences – for carrying placards.

“So, this will be a continuation of that.

“Everybody knows, the government knows this. Everybody is looking forward to it because it is the right of the Nigerian people not to allow this government to destroy them with hunger, scarcity and incompetence.

“Arresting, detaining, and forcibly charging citizens for crimes committed by the government is treason. And this is not the first time I have been accused of treason. In fact, I heard about the treason offense in 1992 at the University of Lagos when we went and did Babangida Must Go.

“And the police arrested us at the Western Avenue Police Station, asked us to start writing statements under pressure, and said that we wanted to overthrow the government. That was the time when Olusegun Mayegun was the President of NANS.

“I was charged with treason in 2019 by Buhari, so I am no stranger to this bogus treason offence. However, that is not our focus. Our focus is that we have a country to liberate and a people to save. So, whatever offences are committed against us, we should not be discouraged.

“It is up to the people to determine what constitutes a treason offense. And I must also tell you that in 1994, Tinubu was accused of treason. If you recall, he was accused of bombing the Ejigbo depot by Abacha.

“So that’s why he left Nigeria and went into exile. But in our case, we are not going into exile just because the government is afraid of our package.”
