Nigeria’s hopes of making a strong start in the men’s 100 meters at the African Athletics Championships suffered an early setback after Favor Ashe was disqualified for a false start during the qualifiers in Ghana.

The Nigerian sprinter was competing in Heat 2 and had initially completed the race before officials announced his disqualification following a start review.

Ashe, along with a Cameroonian athlete in the same race, allegedly failed to hear the race officials’ retreat signal after the false start and continued running before eventually returning to the starting area.

This development brought an abrupt end to Ashe’s campaign in the event, dealing a blow to Nigeria’s medal hopes in one of the championships’ most important sprint races.
