The federal government has begun plans to evacuate Nigerians from South Africa, with at least 130 citizens already signed up for voluntary repatriation flights amid rising anti-foreigner tensions.
The move comes in response to renewed protests and xenophobic rhetoric in cities such as Pretoria and Johannesburg, where protesters accuse undocumented migrants of worsening economic challenges and insecurity.
In a statement posted on her X handle on Sunday, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, said the protection of Nigerians abroad remains a top priority.
“The President reiterated that the priority at this time remains the safety of our citizens. Accordingly, arrangements are currently underway to collect details of Nigerians in South Africa for voluntary repatriation flights for those seeking assistance to return home.
“So far, 130 applicants have duly registered for the exercise at our mission in South Africa, but this figure is expected to increase. Nigerian associations in South Africa are also helping our mission in this regard,” he said.
He noted growing anxiety over the recent protests, adding: “There is increased anxiety over the series of anti-foreigner protests. The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has expressed grave concern over this situation and called for more effective control of the situation by the host country’s security services.”
Odumegwu-Ojukwu also confirmed the deaths of two Nigerians in separate incidents reportedly involving security personnel, describing the development as deeply worrying.

He said: “This is absolutely condemnable and unacceptable. The Nigerian High Commission is closely following the investigation into these unfortunate incidents and Nigeria calls for justice to be done in these cases.”
With another series of demonstrations planned between May 4 and 8, Bola Tinubu ordered close monitoring of the situation and Nigeria summoned South Africa’s High Commissioner.
The minister added that diplomatic missions are engaging local authorities to reduce risks, underlining Nigeria’s historic support for the liberation of South Africa and calling for an end to recurring xenophobic attacks.
