FIFA rejects Nigeria’s request on DRC’s eligibility and NFF set to appeal

FIFA has dismissed a petition filed by the Nigerian Football Federation questioning the eligibility of players used by the Democratic Republic of the Congo in their 2026 FIFA World Cup play-off clash.

The NFF had raised concerns over alleged irregularities in the issuance of passports to certain DRC players, suggesting possible violations that could have affected their match eligibility.

The match, played at the Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan stadium in Rabat on November 16, 2025, served as the final of the African playoffs.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged victorious after a dramatic penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw after regulation time and extra time.

Despite FIFA’s decision to reject the request, the NFF has made it clear that it will not back down.

NFF Secretary General Mohammed Sanusi told Brila.net that the federation has already started an appeal process.

“We have received the decision of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee on our petition, but we are not satisfied with the decision, which rejected our petition. I want to assure Nigerians that the NFF has immediately initiated the process of appealing the decision.”

The case is now expected to be taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), where Nigeria will seek a review of FIFA’s ruling.

With tensions rising and legal proceedings underway, further developments are anticipated in the coming days as the situation develops.
