Floods in Kenya leave 88 people dead and thousands displaced | World News

The death toll from flooding in Kenya has risen to 88, the government said, as two rivers overflowed their banks, causing more refugees.

More than 34,000 people have been displaced and at least 21 countries have been affected by the flooding, which began in early March.

On Monday, the Nyando River in western Kenya overflowed, partially submerging the Ahero Bridge along the Kericho-Awasi-Kisumu road and disrupting transport in the region.

The government urges motorists to avoid flooded routes and seek alternative routes.

“This warning is especially important during times of darkness, when it is difficult to accurately determine the depth and strength of flowing water,” a statement said.

Rescue efforts led by the Kenya Red Cross are intensifying in the worst-hit areas.

In the Nyando area, rescue teams have evacuated more than 200 people and more than 200 livestock, while at least two families were rescued from danger.

Authorities are also trying to evacuate more than 900 students from Ahero Girls National School as flood waters continue to rise.

At least 265 households were affected in the region, Kenya’s Ministry of Home Affairs and National Administration said on Tuesday.

Displaced residents were accommodated in public facilities, including government offices, churches and health centers.

Six unaccompanied children were among those rescued and are currently in care.

Flooding was also reported in other areas.

In the Tana River region, the Tana River overflowed, flooding agricultural land in Mbalambala and surrounding areas, including the village of Asako, and threatening food production.

In the Uasin Gishu region, a multi-agency team is assessing the impact of rising water levels along the Sosiani River at Lower Elgon View, where residential and hospitality facilities have been impacted.
