Abuja (basic reporter) The manager of the public relations of the force of the police forces of Nigeria, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, asked for a stronger collaboration between the media and the police in the interest of national security and the trust of the public.

Hundeyin made this appeal during a visit to the Union of Journalists of Nigeria (Nuj), Federal Council of the territory of the capital (FCT). He observed that his work as a police spokesman would be difficult without a strong support from the media. “I cannot be successful in this role without the collaboration of the press,” he said.

Hundeyin used the opportunity to ask for a balanced reportage, underlining that the chain effect of negative stories can damage the trust of the public in the police. “The police are strongly based on information,” he said. “The officers cannot be everywhere at the same time, which is why the advice of people and shared intelligence are so important. But when the public loses confidence in us, those vital sources of information dry up and this puts everyone at risk.”

For their part, the police will continue to do everything that is humanly possible to protect lives and properties, he said. He added that insecurity in a part of the country can influence the entire nation. Hundeyin stressed that her message did not concern the control of the printing, but on the encouragement of balanced and responsible reports. “Today I’m appealing you, help us build confidence,” he said. “We work together through open communication and the partnership to make the police and the country stronger.”

Hundeyin has also promised to respond quickly and fairly to any problem that journalists face while carrying out their work, especially in their interactions with police officers.

In response, the president of Nuj Fct, his partner Grace Ike, welcomed Hundeyin’s visit and expressed promptly to work closely with him. “On behalf of the Board Nuj Fct, I welcome you warmly,” he said. “We really appreciate this effort from the police to connect directly with the media. Show your commitment to open dialogue and better understanding.”

He continued by saying: “Nuj FCT does not tolerate any form of harassment or intimidation of journalists. Freedom of the press is a right, not a privilege. As journalists, we recognize the key role that the police play in maintaining peace and supporting the law. At the same time, the public needs timely, accurate and honest information to have confidence in the police and in other security agencies.”

“That’s why our relationship must be built on trust and cooperation. Together, we can stop the spread of disinformation and promote relationships that help the company to go on.” Comrade Ike promised the support of the Board Nuj FCT in working with the police for the good of the public. “We are ready to collaborate with you,” he said. “Let’s assure you that information flow freely and responsible, so that both of our institutions can serve people better.”
