Former vice -presidents Atiku Abubakar has formally resigned from the Democratic Party of people (PDP).
Attiku’s resignation comes a few weeks after a coalition of opposition figures has revealed the African democratic congress (ADC) as a platform to challenge the all progressive Congress (APC) and the administration of President Bola Tinubu in the presidential elections of 2027.
In a letter dated 14 July 2025 and addressed to the president of the PDP Jada 1 Ward in the state of Adamawa, Atiku cited “irreconcilable differences” and a departure from the founding ideals of the party as reasons for his decision.
The letter recited: “I am writing to resign formally my subscription from the Popular Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect.
“As a founding father of this esteemed game, it is really heartbreaking for me to make this decision. However, I find it necessary to separate because of the current trajectory he has taken, that I believe he will have fun from the fundamental principles we have represented.”
Atiku, who was vice -president of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007, was nominated for the presidency of the PDP in the 2019 and 2023 elections.
He said: “Serve two complete terms as vice president of Nigeria and being candidate for the presidency twice was one of the most significant chapters of my life
“I wish the party and its leadership all the best in the future. Thanks again for the opportunities and support.”
