The former director of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC LTD) company communications, Mr. Femi Soneye, he invited the federal government to support Nigerian media with targeted incentives, including tax relief and donations for importing on average essential tools.
Soneye appealed to Abuja Tuesday after receiving the Nuj Fct Excellence award in Corporate Communications Award, awarded to him by the Union of Nigerian journalists (Nuj), FCT Council.
The Nuj leadership, led by President Grace Ike, alongside the vice -president, the Secretary General and other managers, described Soneye as a professional consumed who distinguished himself with touch and excellence in the field of communications.
In his observations, Soney has observed that while the Nigerian media remain one of the most vibrant in Africa, continues to face the systemic challenges that weaken its effectiveness.
“The Nigerian media remain one of the most vibrant in Africa, but they also face systemic, financial, political, legal and technological challenges that weaken its effectiveness. The government can play a support role by granting tax incentives or relief in import duties for printing, transmitted equipment and digital infrastructures,” he said.
He also urged the Federal Government to establish an independent media development fund to support investigative journalism, community radio and the innovation of editorial offices, drawing parallels with South Africa, United States and Canada models.
The prize underlines the longtime contributions of Soneye to journalism and corporate communications, as well as its defense for the strongest, independent and sustainable Nigerian media.
