The forum of the governors of the Democratic Party (PDP-GF) greeted the lasting inheritance of the PDP as a pillar of the democratic journey of Nigeria since its training on August 3, 1998.
The President of the Forum and Governor of the State of Bauchi, Senator Bala Mohammed, made the observations on Sunday in Abuja in a declaration signed by the general manager of the forum, dr. Emmanuel Agbo, to commemorate the 27th anniversary of the party.
Mohammed congratulated the party leadership, members and supporters for their constant commitment to democracy and national development.
He observed that the PDP was founded during the historical transition of Nigeria from military domain to the civil government and quickly emerged as a lighthouse of hope for millions in search of democratic freedom, economic progress and social justice.
“The party victory of the party in the general elections of 1999 marked the beginning of a new democratic era, with the former President OlusaGun Obasanjo who laid the foundations for progressive leadership and institutional reconstruction,” he said.
He stressed that the PDP has ruled Nigeria for 16 consecutive years, producing three presidents and implementing transformative reforms in telecommunications, banks, education, health care and infrastructure.
“These reforms have favored economic stability, the improvement of workers’ well -being, expanded job opportunities, stimulated investments and revitalized entrepreneurship, ultimately contributing to the reduction of poverty,” he added.
Mohammed also praised the lasting commitment of the PDP for the rotation of power between the North and the South, a principle that promoted national unity and inclusiveness.
Although currently in opposition, he said, the PDP continued to play a vital role in making democratic governance advance, defending the rights of citizens and to consider the government responsible.
“His presence supported in the National Assembly and various state governments reflect his profound connection with the Nigerian people and his strong adherence to democratic values,” he observed.
Reflecting on the party trip, Mohammed recognized that while the PDP had faced challenges, including internal disagreements and electoral arrest lines, continued to demonstrate resilience and a strong will to reform.
“The party made great strides in promoting internal reconciliation and remained vocal in asking for a decisive action to face insecurity and restore peace to our communities,” he said.
While the PDP celebrates 27 years of political relevance, Mohammed described it both as a celebration of the inheritance and as an appeal to the renewed commitment for good government, transparency and public service.
“The road to go is as important as the path already taken. The Nigerians can’t wait for a PDP that continues to evolve, inspire and guide integrity,” he added.
