Guild of Editors suspends the publisher for a year – Thage

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) suspended one of its members, Steve Osuji, for violating the provision “out of the documentation” in the ethical code for journalists in Nigeria.

Thursday, in a press statement by Eze Anaba (President) and Mr. Onuoha Ukeh (Secretary General), La Gilda said that there was an agreement on the fact that the main address held by the general manager of the state security service (SSS), not for publication, not for publication and not for publication and not for publication and not for publication.

The guild said that, despite the announcement of this agreement, “a senior journalist and a member of the guild, Steve Osuji, has published an article based on the presentation on his social media platforms, violating our Code of Ethics on confidentiality”.

The professional body said that “this poor professional conduct takes seriously and has announced the suspension of Mr. Osuji from our professional organ for a year, with an immediate effect.

The NGE apologized with the general manager of the ASS and the institution it represents for the embarrassment caused by the actions of Mr. Osuji, while reaffirmed his “commitment to support the highest standards of journalism and ensure that our members adhere to our Code of Ethics”.

The NGE said that “Mr. Osuji will have the opportunity to appeal with this decision”.

The guild also reiterated its dedication “to the promotion of professional conduct and the maintenance of public trust in the media”.

Reacting to his suspension, Mr. Osuji told Thaage that he did not see anything wrong with the published article that justified his suspension. He said that the publishers’ conference had security as the theme and does not understand why the DG of SSS should have spoken anonymously. According to him, what he subsequently published in his article now considered a violation of confidentiality, contained the questions he would ask the head of the light: why does security detach us? Why is the intelligence failing us?

He also claimed to have rejected the persuasion by the guild who pulled down the article published on his Facebook wall, because “they told me that the SSS DG asked confidentiality, and everyone agreed on the fact that what he said should not be out of recording. I did not hear.
