Former Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro has stated that he wants to leave his role after the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.
Peseiro, who coached the men’s national football team for 22 months, refused to renew his contract in February 2024 because he decided not to continue in the job.
The Portuguese coach said he left his post because of the pressure and stress that came with the job.
He led his team to second place in the tournament, but said he would still leave his job if the Eagles beat Ivory Coast in the final.
He said: “I decided that once AFCON is over, I will stop. I have put too much effort into my job, it is too stressful.
“Everyone supports me – my family and the players, but I feel tired, I think it’s enough for me, even if I win AFCON.”

Despite facing various challenges while managing the Super Eagles, Peseiro told SABC Sport that “the job is special”.
“Nigeria is a great team, with good players. We played very well in AFCON. I thought our team was the best until we lost to Ivory Coast in the tournament.”
Peseiro has been out of work since leaving Nigeria, with the former Venezuela coach saying he is waiting for the right project.
“I was waiting for a good job, for a good move. There were offers from South Africa, Europe and Brazil too, but I didn’t take them and I was happy with the job.
“Someone called to tell me about the job at Sundowns and stuff, but until now, nothing special,” he said.
