Immigration warns the Nigerians not to abuse US tourism visas for labor citizenship

Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a formal advisor that urges Nigerians to strictly comply with their US visa terms and conditions, especially warnings so as not to use tourism visas to give birth in the United States in an effort to secure US citizenship for their children.

In a statement released on Saturday in Abuja, service community service officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, highlighted the developing concerns raised by the US government regarding the abuse of non-immigrant visas by Nigerian citizens. Advisor came in the midst of new supervision “Birth Tourism,” practice where foreign nationals traveled to the US, especially for giving birth so that the child gained American citizenship with the right of blessing.

“US consular officers will refuse the tourist visa application if they believe the main purpose of the trip is to give birth in the United States to get US citizenship for children,” the statement was emphasized.

NIS emphasized that all visa holders must comply with the goals stated in their application. Every deviation, such as being involved in giving birth tourism, can result in revocation of visas, deportation, and not meet permanent requirements for US trips in the future.

Akinlabi notes that the US government is filtering a sustainable immigration, not limited to the initial entry point. Every violation of visa provisions, including oversaying or involved in activities that are not permitted under the visa class, can attract severe punishment.

Further advisors directed Nigerian students in the United States to maintain active registration in approved academic programs, warning that unauthorized or absent withdrawals from schools can also cause visa cancellation.

“We ask all Nigerian citizens to comply with US visa rules, because such behaviors are important to protect legitimate travel opportunities,” Akinlabi said.

He added that Nigerian immigration services continued to collaborate with US missions in Abuja to prevent Nigeria including any expanded visa restrictions or travel ban.

This development reflects an increase in efforts by the Nigerian and US authorities to uphold the integrity of the travel system and international visa, especially considering that new cases where several visa holders have misinterpreted their intentions, damage bilateral agreements and place legal travelers in high supervision risks.
