Inec noted more than 1.3 million pre-registration online voters in the first week of CVR training

The Independent National Election Commission (Inec) has announced that more than 1.37 million Nigerians have participated in the online pre-registration portal for Sustainable Voter Registration (CVR) in just one week from the national training launch.

Commissioner and Chair of the National Commission, Information Education Committee and Voters, Mr. Sam Oluumekun, revealed the numbers in a statement issued Monday from the Inec headquarters in Abuja.

According to Oluumekun, online registration starts on Monday, August 18, and in the first seven days on Sunday, August 24-total 1,379,342 Nigerians have completed the online process.

Initial weekly updates released by the commission include demographic disorders such as the State of Residence, Gender, Age Group, Occupation, and Registrant Disability Status.

Among the states, Osun led with the highest pre-registration number, recording 393,823, which contributed 28.51 percent of the total. Lagos was followed by 222,205 registration (16.11 percent), while Ebonyi noted the least, with only 261 registrants (0.02 percent).

Gender damage shows that 717,856 registrants are women (52.04 percent), while 661,846 are men (47.96 percent).

“Young people aged between 18 and 34 years are the majority of registrants with 860,286 (62.37 percent),” Oluumekun said.

He added that the dominant work group among registrants was students, forming 374,534 (27.15 percent), while 27,089 people (1.96 percent) were identified as living with disability.

Olumekun also told the public that the details of full registration have been published on the Inec website and other official platforms for transparency.

In addition to the online process, he noted that physical registration (directly) began nationally on Monday in 811 centers in all states and local government offices, serving those who could not afford or do not want to use an online system.

“This will give those who prefer direct options to register in centers and those who choose the online pre-registration method to complete their registration,” he explained.

He asserted that the ongoing voter registration was only for Nigerian citizens aged 18 years and over who had never registered before.

“Once again, the commission appealed to the public that the ongoing voter registration was only open to Nigerian citizens who were at least 18 years old and those who were not registered voters.

“Double or double registration is a violation of the law,” he said.

However, the commission clarifies that registered voters are allowed to submit transfers between countries or intra-countries, and can also request a replacement of lost or damaged voter cards during the CVR window.

Oluumekun stressed that registration will remain open for one year, until August 30, 2026, but urged the Nigerians to avoid the last minute.

“However, the commission urged all registrants who intend not to wait until the deadline.

“From experience, the registration center is flooded with eleventh hours in the middle of an appeal for extra time, and this is not good,” he said.
