INEC set the by-election for June 20

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the Kebbi State Senate, House of Representatives and House of Assembly by-elections will be held on Saturday, June 20.

By-elections will be held in six states – Kebbi, Kano, Ondo, Rivers, Nasarawa and Enugu.

Ondo’s senatorial seat became vacant, following the resignation of Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, who returned to work at the UN as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative.

Three other senatorial by-elections will be held in Rivers, Nasarawa and Enugu to fill the vacancies created by the deaths of Senators Barinada Mpigi, Godiya Akwashika and Okey Ezea.

INEC Chairman Prof Joash Amupitan announced the date on Thursday during the swearing-in of the National Commissioner, Rear Admiral Jamila Malafa (rtd.).

He said the by-election would be held simultaneously with the Ekiti State gubernatorial election scheduled for the same date.

Amupitan said: “We will soon have an out-of-cycle election. The Ekiti State Governorship election is scheduled for June 20, 2026. On the same date, the Commission will conduct a direct election to fill the vacant seat.

“The senatorial seats declared vacant in Enugu, Nasarawa, Rivers and Ondo States will be filled, along with the Kebbi State House of Representatives seat and Kano State House of Representatives seat,” he said.

The Commission Chair reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to its constitutional mandate.

Amupitan said: “Our responsibility is clear. We are committed to holding elections in the offices of the President, National Assembly, Governor, State Council and Regional Councils in a credible and transparent manner,” he said.
