As part of the efforts to promote tourism and culture in the state of Ogun, the famous Olumo Rock Tourist Center of Abeokuta will be open to the members of the public for free until the end of September this year.
The governor Dapo Inhabitun, who made the announcement on Thursday at the inauguration of the recently renewed tourist complex, said that the gesture is to encourage people to embrace tourism and appreciate the wealth of their culture.
The complex has a gallery that contains works of art consisting of images of eminent Nigeriani, a gazebo, a restaurant that will serve both local and continental dishes, shops for the sale of fabrics to and a set of standby generators that will feed the elevators and other structures just installed.
Olumo Rock, observed the governor, is more than a majestic outcrop or a assembly of stones; It represents a sanctuary of strength, a symbol of refuge and an identity for a people.
“For centuries, it has remained high, offering safety and identity to the EGBA people in times of conflict and change.
“The renewal of this sacred site does not only concern the infrastructure; it is a question of reviving memory, rekindling pride and reaffirming our cultural roots. The site connects us to our roots.
“We recognize that tourism, if developed adequately, has the ability to generate employment, attract investments, promote cultural understanding and serve as a catalyst for the development of the community,” he said.
The governor observed that his administration would continue to give priority to tourism as a strategic pillar of the Iseya development agenda, underlining that, if developed correctly, it could have an impact on the local economy, generate job opportunities and increase the revenues of the state.
While declared the state a destination of main choice, Governor inhabitu has nodded to tourists from all over the world to come into the state and experiment with his tourist attractions, adding that the Olumo rock tourism complex has undergone a total renewal and is now equipped with a world -class and restaurants gallery.
He said: “This renewal transformed Olumo Rock from a historical relic into a modern destination of the heritage. From an economic point of view, this revitalized complex is a tourist magnet.
“The areas of entrepreneurs have been provided for craftsmen, sellers and creatives to show their talents and benefit from the growing visitors. This center will increase local trade, enhance our young people and build a flourishing cultural and creative economy.
“Socially, Olumo Rock reminds us who we are: a people of strength, a people of courage, a people of ingenuity and a people of unity. Spiritually, it connects us with our roots and reaffirm the values that we find in our collective identity. It stands as a cultural invitation in the world.”
The goal of his administration, said Governor Inhabitun, is to establish tourist sites throughout the state, making sure that the renewed Olumo Rock tourist complex would have been granted to a reliable organization for its right maintenance.
By welcoming guests on the occasion, the commissioner for culture and tourism, Hon. Sesan Fagbayi appreciated the Governor of the State for the repositioning of the tourist center, adding that this would attract more tourists and visitors.
In his observations, the sovereign Alake and Paramount of Egbaland, Oba Adedontun Aremu Gbadebo, revealed that the rock, in the old days, served as a sanctuary for the EGBA people and was also used as a military observation place from local militias who defended the city from invaders.
While noting the spiritual importance of the tourist center, the monarch observed that, in addition to serving as a place where prayers have an answer, it provides a place for relaxation for the seekers, even if he appreciated the governor inhabitants for having given the structure a lifting.
The managing director of the Nike Arts Gallery, Capo (Mrs) Nike Okundaye, expressed optimism on the fact that the renewal of the complex would lead to an increase in tourist traffic from all over the world, ensuring that a wide range of non -quantifiable services would be offered to local and foreign tourists and visitors.
He said: “We will bring people who are lovers of the art of several museums all over the world to come and celebrate our culture and our inheritance, which is Olumo.
“We will share our knowledge with them and also share their knowledge with us. With this, everyone will benefit. We will create more jobs and train people in new ideas on what they can do to do more money.
“This place will be number one throughout the country; that’s why I said, give it two years.”
