The Jigawa state government has set October 5 for local government elections in the state.
The Chairman of the Jigawa State Electoral Commission (JISIEC), Alhaji Awwal Muhammad, stated this at a stakeholders meeting on Friday in Dutse.
Muhammad assured the KPU of its readiness to hold credible elections in the 27 local government areas in the state.
He reminded that previously the KPU had announced the postponement of the simultaneous regional elections from June to June 2025 following changes to the Election Law.

The Chairman said: “However, I am sure you are aware of the recent Supreme Court ruling ordering all state governments to immediately appoint democratically elected leaders at the local government level in their states.
“In accordance with the said ruling, JISIEC, as the legitimate authority, deems it necessary to revert to its earlier ruling on local government elections, and unanimously calls for a re-amendment of the state electoral law to conform to the ruling of the Supreme Court and accordingly fix Saturday, October 5, 2024, as the new date for the conduct of local government elections in Jigawa State.”
Therefore, he appealed to all ranks of security forces, traditional and religious figures, political parties, youth organizations, women’s groups, youth figures, mass media and the community to fully support the KPU’s efforts in realizing credible elections in their regions.
