Former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi on Monday held a private meeting, triggering ongoing political consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Details about the closed-door meeting emerged via a post by ADC Vanguard, the mobilization arm of the African Democratic Congress coalition, which shared videos and images from the meeting on its X account.
The group described the interactions as strategic, and stressed that they centered on efforts to unite opposition forces ahead of the elections.
“Goodluck Jonathan and Peter Obi are holding high-level discussions regarding the nomination of a presidential candidate for the opposition party,” he said.
Obi attended the meeting with a delegation consisting of Igbo elders, ADC senators from the South East, and several political allies.
This engagement comes amidst ongoing Obi consultations across the country, as talks escalate around a possible alliance of the president with former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, with both figures playing key roles in the ADC.
This meeting was also a continuation of the major opposition summit held in Ibadan, where key political actors gathered to discuss the political future of the opposition.
The event, hosted by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, featured influential figures including Atiku Abubakar, Kwankwaso and Rotimi Amaechi.

At the end of the meeting, participants issued the Ibadan Declaration, committing to a coordinated opposition strategy. The resolution emphasizes the need to challenge the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress, opposes what it describes as a trend toward a one-party system, and seeks to present a single consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.
