Former governor of Kano State and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has resigned his membership of the party.
Kwankwaso, who announced his decision in a statement, said he felt the need for a “strategic realignment” in response to the evolving political landscape in the country.
“I wish to officially announce my resignation from the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) immediately,” he said.
“As a committed and bona fide party member, this was not an easy decision,” he said.
Explaining the reasons behind his resignation, Kwankwaso said he intended to align himself with other political platforms that he believed offered better opportunities to drive national change.
The former governor described the decision as difficult, but did not name the new party he would join.

“Considering the current direction of the country’s political landscape, which requires a strategic realignment, I feel the need to identify other political platforms that offer the best opportunity to effectively transform the nation,” he added.
He expressed his appreciation to the party leadership and members for their support while at NNPP.
“I express my deepest appreciation to the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed and the entire National Working Committee for their unwavering support during my tenure,” said Kwankwaso.
He also thanked other party organs, including the Board of Trustees, the National Executive Committee, and members at all levels, as well as supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
“I also thank… all levels of leadership across the party – from the regional level to the state level… and all followers of the Kwankwasiyya Movement for their dedication and commitment to our shared mission,” he said.
“We will continue to collaborate and work together to chart a better and more prosperous future for our beloved nation,” he added.
There is speculation that Kwankwaso may move to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) amid political realignment in the state.
These speculations were further strengthened by his recent meeting with President Bola Tinubu, and the defection of the state governor, also a former NNPC member to the APC.
