Lagos loses N1Trn every year because of traffic jams, said Sanwo-Olu aide

Lagos residents lost N1 trillion which shocked per year because of the productivity lost in traffic jams throughout the state, according to special advisors to the Governor of Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Hon. SOLA GIWA.

Giwa conducted this disclosure on Tuesday at the opening of the Second Lagos Traffic Conference, held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island. This conference is part of the event for a week to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (Lastma).

According to him, the Lagos commuter spends an average of six hours every day in traffic, which causes major losses in working hours and overall productivity.

However, he noted that Lastma’s operation and intervention had helped restore the estimated N4 billion productivity which was previously lost due to delays in traffic.

“The economic cost of traffic congestion in Lagos is very large, estimated to be more than N1 trillion per year. With an average trip time of six hours every day for many residents, it is very important that we rethink our traffic management strategies,” Giwa said.

Themed “Increasing Traffic Efficiency and Security in Lagos Street: Challenges, Opportunities, and Innovations,” The Three-Day Conference was officially opened by the Governor of Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by his representative, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat.

High -level meetings attract transportation experts, technocrats, policy makers, law enforcement officials, academics, private sector stakeholders, and international partners, all of them gather to explore sustainable solutions for lagos eternal traffic problems.

In the significant spotlight of the event, General Manager Lastma, Mr. Olarekan Bakare-Oki, launched a 20-year-old Strategic Traffic Management Policy of the State of Lagos, which he described as a long-term vision to reform and modernize the traffic system in the state.

“This strategic framework is a brave and transformative blueprint that aims to increase traffic flow, improve infrastructure, strengthen law enforcement, and adopt smart mobility solutions,” said Bakare-Oki.

The policy, according to him, is in line with the agenda of developing themes+ Governor Sanwo-Olu and designed to make Lagos a model for urban traffic efficiency in Africa.

As the conference passing by, participants are expected to negotiate about major innovations, such as AI-powered traffic systems, improvement of nameplate and road networks, and traffic awareness campaigns driven by the community, to reduce congestion and improve commuter experience throughout the state.
