Ikorodu residents in the state of Lagos have cried over the deterioration of the worse floods that have submerged the area, destroying their houses, property, roads, and their livelihoods.
Floods that occurred after dense rain that was persistent in the state in the past week reportedly caused great difficulties for the population, especially in the area of Ijede Ikorodu which was always vulnerable to such disasters during the rainy season.
In some videos that have been shared on social media platforms since Monday, some residents are seen lamenting the situation, with many of them crying for help when floods soak their environment.
In one video, a woman was heard crying because of a disaster.
“We are in Oko Ope in Ijede. We are friendly. This is our community. We cannot even enter the house; the flood has damaged everything.
“Please help us. Floods have shifted us. I could not even enter my apartment because I had damaged everything. I was wearing clothes but now barefoot. It has sweeping everything we save at home. People came to save their people; we were trapped. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, we chose to you, come and save us,” he begged at Yoruba.
In another video, a man was heard asking for the government’s attention to the flood situation in his community in the Ijede area in the state.
“This is what I face in my area in Ijede. From August 3-4, Monday morning, inside and outside my house is full of water. Big Ocean. Look, my three cars are in the water.”
In another video, a man who said he lived in my Igbogbo-Bay in Ikorodu, was heard lamenting the impact of the flood, calling for residents to pray that the rain would not continue throughout the day, warning that it could force people to move from the area.
“My people are in Lagos, especially in Ikorodu, this is the shame on Igbogbo Bayu. Just look at the rainfall from the last night to this morning. It feels like we live in the sea. Flood water has entered so many houses and shops. Look around; can you see how the whole complex is submerged?
However, the State Commissioner for environmental and water resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has called for calm, convincing people in the affected area that the government will take steps to improve the flood situation.
In a post on his grip on Tuesday, Wahab said the state worked to provide a permanent solution for the problem.
He stated that he had directed the contractor to start exploring the work immediately to the drainage point, noting that the construction of the culverts must be prioritized first, adding that the concrete layer, part of the overall project, will continue after the culverts in their place.
“We have seen a video that is trending and fully understood the worries that have been raised,” said the Commissioner.
“I want to convince all residents of the Ikorodu that the ongoing drainage project in the area, provided by Governor Jide Sanwoolu, is designed to provide a permanent solution for the problem.
“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience that is currently faced by residents. This is temporary. What we are doing now is laying the foundation for permanent improvement that will improve the quality of life for everyone in the area.”
Apart from the icorodu, other parts of Lagos who faced floods that were destroyed were Jakande, Ajah, Okota, Lekki and Ajegunle, with floods causing traffic jams.
