Many are feared dead when a NAF helicopter crashed into a river in Ondo

Several people may have died after a helicopter crashed into a river in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje LGA of Ondo State on Monday causing panic among residents of coastal communities.

Meanwhile, while rescue efforts are underway, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed the ownership of the aircraft.

Ehimen Ejodame, NAF director of public relations and information, said the plane was on a “routine mission” when it crashed early Monday morning.

An air force spokesman said rescue operations were underway, adding that the plane was headed to Lagos from Benin, Edo State.

“The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has immediately activated Search and Rescue operations following the crash of an ATR-42 aircraft in Igbokoda area of ​​Ondo State on 5 October 2026,” the statement read.

“The aircraft was on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos when the accident occurred. Search and rescue operations in coordination with the relevant authorities and emergency response agencies are currently underway.

“Further details will be communicated in due course.”

Assembled, the aircraft are used for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) as well as air maritime operations.

The Ondo State police command had earlier confirmed the incident, but said details surrounding the accident were still unknown.

But residents said that the accident occurred in a swamp area opposite the naval base.
