Meta acquires robotics startup ARI to advance its humanoid AI push

Meta has acquired humanoid robotics startup Assured Robot Intelligence (ARI) to deepen its investment in advanced AI systems capable of operating in the physical world.

The company said ARI specializes in developing robotic intelligence that enables machines to interpret, anticipate and respond to human behavior in complex and dynamic environments. Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Following the deal, ARI’s team – including co-founders Xiaolong Wang and Lerrel Pinto – will integrate into the Meta AI division within Superintelligence Labs’ research arm. The startup, which has initial backing from AIX Ventures, focuses on building foundational models that enable humanoid robots to perform a variety of real-world tasks, including household and manual work.

Wang, a former Nvidia researcher and professor at the University of California, San Diego, and Pinto, a former NYU academic and co-founder of Fauna Robotics, have significant expertise in robotics and machine learning. Pinto’s previous venture was recently acquired by Amazon.

Meta said the addition of the ARI team will enhance its work on robot control systems and self-learning capabilities, particularly in developing coordinated whole-body movements for humanoid robots.

The acquisition highlights Meta’s long-term ambitions in humanoid robotics, a field it has been quietly developing. Previous internal documents revealed plans to develop consumer-oriented robots powered by in-house AI models and hardware.
