Military arrests 16 officers on indiscipline, martial frames of the court

The Armed Forces of Nigeria confirmed the arrest of 16 military officers for alleged acts of indiscipline and violation of the service regulations, with those found guilty after investigations to face the Martial Court.

The director of defense information, the brigade general Tukur Gusau, revealed it in a statement on Saturday, underlining that the military would not tolerate any behavior that undermines his integrity or threatens his constitutional duties under the democratic authority.

According to him, the preliminary investigations revealed that the complaints of the arrested officers were largely linked to repeated failures in the promotion exams and stagnation perceived in their military careers.

He said: “The armed forces of Nigeria want to inform the public that a routine military exercise led to the arrest of sixteen officers on issues of indiscipline and violation of the service regulations.

“The investigations revealed that their grievances derive largely from the perceived stagnation of the career caused by repeated failures in the promotion exams, among other issues”.

The defense spokesman explained that some of the affected officers were already facing a trial for different crimes before their arrest.

HHe argued that the internal disciplinary system of the army would be completely applied.

“Upon completion of the investigations, the officers accused will have to face the entire military disciplinary process in accordance with the procedures established to guarantee responsibility and preserve the professionalism within the armed forces”, added Gusau.

He underlined that the action was not politically motivated, but part of routine disciplinary measures aimed at maintaining order, loyalty and professionalism in the ranks.

“The armed forces will not tolerate the behavior that undermines the integrity of the institution or threatens its constitutional role under the democratic authority.

“The armed forces of Nigeria remain fully engaged in its constitutional responsibilities and will remain professional at all times,” he said.

The cases of disciplinary action are not new in the Nigerian army, which in the past has sanctioned the staff for mutiny, desertion and other prejudicial conduct for the discipline of the service.
