Nafdac clarified the prohibition of alcohol sachet, said the temporary appointment until December

The National Agency for Administration and Medicine and Medicine Control (Nafdac) has issued a formal clarification regarding the status of a small sachet and alcohol prohibition, emphasizing that the temporary suspension of law enforcement is only valid until 31 December 2025.

Speaking in Abuja on Monday, Kenneth Azikiwe, Director of the Directorate of Nafdac in the Federal Capital Region, eliminated a report that suggested a permanent reversal of the prohibition. He stressed that the temporary appointment was the direction of the minister intended to create a transition period for stakeholders.

“There is an appointment of the Minister regarding the prohibition of alcohol sachets, but only temporarily and will be reviewed on December 31, 2025,” Azikiwe said. “After this date, the full prohibition will begin.”

He explained that temporary actions were introduced to provide producers, regulators, and other stakeholders the time needed to harmonize their process with policies and prepare for the abolition of structured products.

Azikiwe also highlighted the Nafdac national public awareness campaign, which he said had reached 36 states. This sensitization effort focuses not only on the health risks of alcohol sachet consumption but also on the enforcement of age restrictions.

“We have been involved with distributors and retailers, underline the importance of not selling alcoholic products to people under 18 years,” he said. “This age warning is clearly printed on the product label and must be strictly obeyed.”

The Nigerian Penalting and Beverage Association is recognized for its role in supporting public education efforts, strengthening Nafdac’s calls for responsible marketing and distribution practices.

Azikiwe reiterated the commitment of agency to health and public safety, added that after December 2025, sachets and small bottle alcohol products, especially under 200 milliliters, would be fully removed from the Nigerian market.

“The main goal remains a vulnerable population protection, especially young people, from easy access to cheap and high alcoholic content products,” he concluded.
