The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has announced that 281 inmates are missing following an evacuation effort triggered by recent floods in Maiduguri. Officers, supported by other security agencies, have moved the inmates to safer facilities.
This information was disclosed in a statement by the Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO), Mr. Abubakar Umar, on Sunday in Abuja.
According to Umar, seven inmates have been recaptured, while the search for the remaining inmates is still ongoing. “The floods have destroyed the walls of correctional facilities, including the Maiduguri medium security detention center (MSCC) as well as staff quarters in the city,” Umar explained.
He added, “After officers from the service with the support of relevant security agencies evacuated the prisoners to safe and secure facilities, 281 prisoners were declared missing.”

However, Umar assured that the NCoS has data on the missing prisoners, including their biometrics. “The service is working closely with other security agencies as covert and overt deployment of forces has been activated to search for them.”
Umar emphasized that although seven prisoners were successfully recaptured and returned, efforts to search for and secure other prisoners are still ongoing. “As long as these efforts are ongoing, the public is confident that the incident will not disrupt or affect public safety,” he said.
