
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) claims to have arrested 312 suspects and seized 803,672 kg of hard drugs between June 2024 and May 2025 in Akwa Ibom
Mrs. Obot Bassey, commander of Akwa Ibom from Ndlea, revealed him during a press conference that marked 2025 International Day against drug abuse and illegal trafficking in Uyo on Monday.
The news agency of Nigeria (Nan) reports that the theme for observance this year is; “The evidence is clear: invested in prevention, #break the Circolo.”
The commander said that the theme was a transition from reaction to prevention, on the basis of strategies, data, research and evidence.
According to her, from June 2024 to May 2025, we arrested 312 suspicions consisting of 261 males and 51 females and seized 803. 672 kg of drugs.
“We pursued and condemned 38 drug criminals and we made drug addiction prevention programs in 91 offices throughout the state of Akwa Ibom; we rehabilitated 43 males and consultancy to 179 people,” he said.
Bassey said that drug abuse was not only a criminal problem, but a public health problem, underlining that prevention is a shared responsibility.
He invited parents, educators, religious leaders and community members to join to create a support environment that promotes healthy lifestyles and discourage the use of drugs.
He said that, in addition to enforcing the laws, they should also guarantee the protection of the future of Nigerian children.
Bassey reminded young people that drugs negatively imitated people’s health and their well -being in society.
He invited the government, philanthropists, individuals and institutions to invest massively in the preventive measures for the use of drugs.
The commander praised the state government for their support and appealed to logistical vehicles to allow the command to move through the 31 areas of the local government of the State.
However, he said that this year’s theme requested the continuation of investments supported in prevention and thanked the twin security agencies in the state for their collaboration in guaranteeing a drug without drugs.
