The Nigerian Electricity Regulation Commission (NERC) has fined eight N628.03 million Electricity Distribution Companies (Discos) for non -compliance with the restrictions on the estimated billing for customers who do not exist.
The commission revealed this in a statement on its website on Thursday in Abuja.
Affected disco are – Abuja, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola.
NERC said the action was in line with Section 34 (1) (d) from the Electricity Law 2023 (“EA 2023”)
It is said that the disco failed to fully comply with the monthly energy lid issued by the commission between July and September 2024.
The statement reads: “The community may remember that in 2020, the commission issued an order about the estimated bill restrictions (No Order: Nerc/197/20120) and then issued a monthly energy hat to harmonize the estimated bill for customers who were not cursed with consumption measured by meter customers on the same supply feeder.
“A review of discos collection from customers who are not sealing for July to September 2024 (2024/Q3) revealed non -compliance with monthly energy hats issued by the commission.”
The commission also mandates disco to issue commensurate credit adjustments to all customers affected by overbilling on May 15.
