Netizens slam Oshiomhole for calling Edo governor’s wife barren

Former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has come under heavy criticism after he mocked the Governor
Godwin Obaseki and his wife, Betsy, because they have no children.

Oshiomhole, who represents Edo North in the Senate, made the disparaging comments on Sunday while reacting to remarks attributed to Betsy.

The Edo First Lady has allegedly claimed at a forum in the state that the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Monday Okpebholo, has no wife.

In a trending video uploaded on X, Oshiomhole described the governor’s wife as a barren woman.

He also claimed the governor and his wife refused to adopt the child because they did not love children.

“I was shocked yesterday to see Mrs. Obaseki, the first lady, saying that our candidate has no wife. She is the most, I am sorry she had to say that, because here is a woman who has no children. Between her and Obaseki, they have no children, they have no children,” he said.

“They weren’t even ready to adopt. I mean, I don’t blame them, no one should have a child. But people who have a love for children, they go to a motherless home and adopt a child.

“They didn’t adopt, they were both in their 60s. So you got married, I don’t know if it was a contract or whatever, but they didn’t have any children.”

However, the comment received a backlash from many social media users, especially women in Edo State who opposed it.
Oshiomhole’s statement.

An X user with the handle @IamTheIroko, who objected to the Senator’s comments, wrote:

“I am sure many more will support Her Excellency, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki. I have said it before, and I will say it again: it is unwise for a former governor like Senator Adams Oshiomhole to act as a spokesperson for a gubernatorial candidate.

“Unfortunately, some people have failed to understand the implications of Oshiomhole’s actions. If Edo women do not strongly condemn this behavior, many of them will experience similar treatment, perhaps in a different format.

“This is the same Adams Oshiomle who asked a widow to go and die. While women have the right to express themselves freely, it is unacceptable for a man like Adams Oshiomhole to make such comments.

“In fact, Edo women should demand an apology from Oshiomhole for his disrespectful remarks.”
