The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, has congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of the country’s 66th anniversary of independence, calling for a renewed commitment to national unity, patriotism and sustainable development.
Alausa, in an Independence Day message released in Abuja on Thursday, said the anniversary provided Nigerians with an opportunity to reflect on the country’s journey, celebrate their shared identity and renew their collective commitment to building a peaceful, united and prosperous nation.
He stressed that education remains central to Nigeria’s future, describing it as critical to human capital development, social mobility, innovation and sustainable national development.
The minister expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and continued support to the education sector and human capital development.
According to him, the Federal Government, under the Renewed Hope Agenda, is carrying out reforms and investments through the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI) to improve the country’s education system.
He said the initiative focuses on expanding access to education, strengthening educational institutions, supporting students, improving the quality of teachers, promoting technical and vocational education, and equipping young Nigerians with relevant knowledge and skills.
“Much work remains to be done. We must continue to strengthen foundational learning, improve teacher development, expand skills and technical education, promote research and innovation, and provide safe and supportive learning environments where every Nigerian child has the opportunity to learn, develop and realize their potential,” he said.
Alausa reaffirmed its commitment to work with governments at all levels, teachers, parents, students, education stakeholders and development partners to build an accessible, equitable, innovative and responsive education system.
He further urged Nigerian youths to remain confident, disciplined and committed to excellence, stressing that their knowledge, character, creativity and skills are essential to building the country.
“You are not just the leaders of tomorrow; you are important participants in shaping Nigeria today,” he said.
The minister called on Nigerians to uphold unity, patriotism, service and collective responsibility, stressing that education remains one of the strongest foundations for realizing the nation’s aspirations.
He concluded by hailing the courage and resilience of Nigerians and praying for God’s continued blessings on the country, President Tinubu and its citizens.
“Happy Independence Day, Nigeria!” he declared.
