Nigeria and China strengthen ties as Representatives pledge support for bilateral agreements

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, on Friday, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to “deepening ties” with China, praising the Asian country for maintaining good relations with Nigeria over the past decades.

Speaking at a reception to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China in Abuja, Abbas emphasized the importance of the recent China-Africa Cooperation Forum, and highlighted the agreement reached between Nigeria and China as a “beacon of hope” for continued collaboration.

This was contained in a statement issued on Friday evening by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Speaker, Musa Krishi.

“The agreement signed with President Bola Tinubu shows a new commitment to strengthening our bilateral relations,” Abbas said. “This agreement will pave the way for further investment in critical areas such as energy production and technology transfer, which are critical to Nigeria’s sustainable development.” Abbas assured that the National Assembly will provide the necessary legislative framework to support the implementation of the agreement.

Abbas also acknowledged China’s transformative journey from an agrarian society to the world’s second-largest economy, and attributed China’s success to “resilience and visionary leadership.” China’s economic development, technological innovation and social progress have propelled China to global prominence.

Main Cooperation Areas:

– Energy Production: Nigeria and China aim to strengthen cooperation in energy production, which is a critical sector for Nigeria’s sustainable development.

– Technology Transfer: The agreement signed during the China-Africa Cooperation Forum is expected to facilitate technology transfer, enhancing Nigeria’s technological capabilities.

– Agricultural Development: China’s experience in transforming its agricultural sector can provide valuable lessons for Nigeria.
