Nigeria can request a social media history 5 years from the US candidates-Thage

By Victor Osula, Abuja

The Federal Government has suggested the possibility of introducing mutual measures following the United States decision to request Nigerian visas candidates to present the details of their accounts and activities on social media in the last five years.

The US mission in Nigeria had announced that all the candidates seen must list user names, handles, screen names and other identifiers associated with their social media profiles on platforms used over the past five years.

The mission warned that omitting this information could result in the denial of visas or the ineligibility for future applications.

Reacting to development, the spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said that the government is taking into consideration a mutual response that could see US citizens who apply for Nigerian visas subjected to the same requirements.

“We are aware of the development. I think that the new measures they have informed us previously. On issues of this nature, the best option is mutual action.

“Some people from the United States may want to request a visa and we will take the same measures,” Ebienfa said.

He added that an inter-agency meeting involving the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of the Interior and the National Intelligence Agency would have been convened to determine the official response of Nigeria.

“The visa problems are mutual. What you are imposing our citizens to do, we will also give your citizens who apply for our visa,” he underlined
