The United Nations have classified Nigeria as the fourth worst country in the world for attacks on schools, following a strong increase in violence against education in conflict areas.
According to the United Nations Secretary General António Guterres, global attacks on schools have increased by 44 % in the last year, with Nigeria who recorded 2,436 severe verified violations. Only Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory (8,554), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (4,043) and Somalia (2,568) have reported higher figures. Haiti followed closely with 2,269 cases.
Guterres, in a message that marks the international day to protect education on September 9, warned that these violations bring “deep consequences, not only for teachers and young students, but for the future of entire communities and countries”.
He stressed: “No child should risk death to learn”.
The annual report of 2024 of the United Nations on children and armed conflicts has documented over 41,000 episodes of violence against school -age children all over the world.

The results show not only an increase in attacks on schools, but also a 34 % increase in rape and other forms of sexual violence against children and an increase of 17 % of kidnappings, recruitment and other violations – that United Nations have described as “an alarming analysis in brutality”.
In response, the United Nations and his partners supported 370,000 children and teachers between January and July 2025, mainly on the front line and host communities.
“With many unsafe or closed schools, over 420,000 children now attend lessons completely online, while a million rely on hybrid learning.
Reiterating that schools must be protected as safe paradises, the United Nations Chief has asked for responsibility for the authors of attacks.
“The pen, the book and the class are all more powerful than the sword.
“We keep like this and protect the fundamental right of every child to learn in safety and peace,” Guterres urged.
