The Council of Imams and Ulama in Kaduna State has expressed strong opposition to the move that could reportedly undermine the authority of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar.
Secretary of the council, Dr Yusuf Arrigasiyyu, who spoke at a press conference on Sunday in Kaduna, condemned attempts to “denigrate or undermine the honourable office” of the Sultan.
He described the Sultanate as a symbol of “collective identity and heritage” for Nigerian Muslims, which transcends national borders.
The statement read: “We stand in solidarity with His Majesty, the Sultan of Sokoto and condemn any attempt to demean or undermine this esteemed office.
“This Sultanate represents the collective identity and heritage of Nigerian Muslims, which transcends national borders.

“We view any attack on this Sultanate as an attack on our collective dignity and beliefs.
“We urge all parties involved to lay down their swords and embrace peace, recognizing the important role of the Sultanate in promoting unity, understanding and harmony among Muslims and Nigerians.
“We call on the authorities to respect the sanctity and historical significance of the Sultanate, ensuring its continued role as a beacon of guidance and wisdom,” he said.
The Sultan of Sokoto is the spiritual leader of Nigerian Muslims and has significant social and cultural influence throughout the country.
The Sokoto Caliphate, established in the early 19th century, remains a powerful symbol for many Nigerians.
However, the role of the Sultan has evolved over time, leading some to question its relevance in a modern context.
