Nine people have been convicted and sentenced for various violations of cyberspace by two federal high court judges sitting in Calabar, following the prosecution led by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).
Hakimi Ijeoma Ojukwu and Rosemary Oghoghorie Dugbo sentenced him after the Directorate of Zonal Uyo EFCC charged the defendants with separate accusations related to internet fraud, imitation of identity, money laundering, and obtain with false reasons.
The convicts – Nsofor Charles OchiPutor, Anekikan Monday AKPAN, Igwe Greg, Ubong Emmanuel, Columba Chukwubuikem David, Edet Christopher Asuquo, Hakim Chinonso, David Sunday Aniete, and Fidelis Andrew Effiom – found guilty of violations 202. (Prohibition, Prevention).
One of the indictments submitted against Nsofor Ochiagutor stated:
“That you, Nsofor Charles Ochiadu ‘M’ around 2023 in this honorable court jurisdiction do have ownership and control over \ $ 3,000 (three thousand US dollars) deliberately know that the money that forms part of the results of actions that violate the law to get money by getting money by getting money with fake pretense.”

Aneikikan AKPAN, who cheated with a foreign national identity, was charged as follows:
“That you, Anekikan Monday AKPAN (aka Hwan Yeong)” M “sometime in 2024, in Nigeria, within the jurisdiction of this honorable court Did Fraglantly Present Yourself As Hwan Yeong on the social media with intent to gain advantage for your self, DID Three Hundred United States Dollars (\ $ 300) knowing that the money form part of the proceed of an unlawful act to WIT: Cyber ββimitation and thus commit violations that are contrary to section 18. “
The nine defendants pleaded guilty when the indictment was read in court.
Lawyers for the prosecution of Joshua Abolarin and Khamis Mahmud urged the court to punish the defendants, while the defenders advised Udeme Tom, David Akpanifum, and Emmanuel Nsebe requested the relief of punishment.
Judge Ojukwu sentenced Nsofor Ochigutor 12 months in prison for each accusation of two counts, with a fine of 1 million, and ordered compensation \ 3,000 to the victim. The sentence goes together.
The other three AKPAN, Igwe Greg, and Columba David-also also received a same sentence of 12 months with two accusations each. In addition, David was ordered to return \ $ 1,800 to his victims.
Ubong Emmanuel was sentenced to six months in prison for a single accusation
In a separate decision, Judge Dugbo sentenced Edet Asuquo, Judge Chinonso, David Aniete, and Effiom Fidelis each two years in prison, with a choice of fines. They were also ordered to lose the amount \ $ 300, \ $ 180, and \ $ 1,300 each for the federal government.
