NNPC Limited has given a major makeover to the Igbobi National Orthopedic Hospital, commissioning and handing over three fully rehabilitated 100-bed wards as part of its corporate social responsibility commitment.
The upgrade, performed by the NNPC Foundation, covered wards G, H and J. Each ward was equipped with new roofs and ceilings, overhauls of the electrical and mechanical systems, new vinyl flooring, new beds and a central medical gas system to improve patient care.
Before the surgery, the wards were in such poor condition that bed space was limited and patient capacity was affected, hospital officials said.
Speaking at the handover on Tuesday, NNPC Group CEO, Eng. Bashir Bayo Ojulari said the company’s profitability goes beyond production and revenue. “It embraces the level of social impact of the company,” said Ojulari, represented by chief financial officer Adedapo Segun.
Emmanuella Arukwe, CEO of the NNPC Foundation, said the project strengthens a hospital that has served Nigerians for decades. “Our focus remains on practical interventions that improve lives and align with national healthcare priorities,” he noted.
Medical director Dr. Wakeel Lawal said the hospital contacted the NNPC Foundation because the wards were in dire condition. He thanked the NNPC for bringing them up to “international standards”.
“What NNPC Limited has done is beyond rehabilitation. It represents a renewal of hope,” Lawal said.
The event was attended by Sophia Mbakwe, NNPC Executive Vice President, Business Services. The CFO commissioned the wards and unveiled a plaque alongside Dr Lawal and His Royal Highness Alhaji Rodiyallahu Alabi Yunusa, Baale of Bajulaiye, who represented the Oba of Somolu.
The three departments add 300 beds back into service at Igbobi, one of Nigeria’s main referral centers for orthopedic care.
