NNPC denies sabotaging Dangote refinery

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited has denied any involvement in the alleged attempt to sabotage the Dangote Refinery.

The company has demonstrated its significant financial interest in the project.

In an interview with the Bereke Family Radio Programme, published on YouTube on Sunday, NNPC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Olufemi Soneye, reiterated that the company has invested billions of naira in the refinery and currently holds a 7.2% stake.

Soneye argued that any attempt to weaken the refinery would be counterproductive as it would be detrimental to NNPC’s own interests.

He also clarified that NNPC has no relationship with the head of Nigeria’s premier downstream petroleum regulatory authority, Mr. Farouq Ahmed, who has raised concerns about the refinery’s operations.

Soneye said: “We want all Nigerians to know that NNPC Limited has no problem whatsoever with the Dangote Refinery. We are part owners of the Dangote Refinery and we want the refinery to collapse.

“We invested billions of naira into the Dangote refinery. As of now, we have a 7.2% stake in the refinery. So why would we want to sabotage such a company?

“Now, on the issue raised by Mr. Farouq, he does not work for the NNPC. Mr. Farouq Ahmed is the head of Nigeria’s primary and downstream petroleum regulatory authority. They have power over all the refineries. Anything that has to do with petrol distribution, they are in charge. In fact, they are superior to us in that area. We have nothing to do with them.

The statement comes amid allegations of sabotage and tensions in the oil industry.

NNPC’s investment in the Dangote Refinery demonstrates its commitment to the success of the project, contrary to claims of malicious intent.

As the refinery prepares to commence operations, NNPC’s assurances aim to allay concerns and promote a collaborative environment in Nigeria’s petroleum sector.
