NOC President Habu Gumel accuses the new BFN board of directors of ‘taking badminton to a greater height’

the president of Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC)engineer Habu Ahmed Gumel has tasked the newly elected board of directors of the country’s badminton federation to take the sport to a higher level, Sports247 reports.

Gumel made the charge after witnessing this year’s elective congress of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), which he described as a new call to service for the president, lawyer Francis Orbih and his board members.

While noting that Orbih now has a third term as BFN president, Gumel urged him to avoid resting on the oars of his past achievements, but should intensify his efforts to do even better.

Gumel said: “I want them to make sure they take badminton to a greater height. They have been doing very well and I want them to continue like this.”

“We have the Youth Games in Dakar and the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. I want you to start your preparations now, so that you go out and make Nigeria proud.”

He concluded by assuring the NOC’s continued support to all programs and activities of the badminton federation, as well as other sporting bodies, to ensure that they function better in the days to come.

Gumel elaborated: “The Nigerian Olympic Committee will continue to support the badminton federation. We have many areas to support them through our Olympic Solidarity.

“This will be in terms of training, equipment and many other areas of help. When they apply, we will listen to them and make sure we support them.

“We will not do this just for the badminton federation. We will support many of the sports federations in Nigeria to ensure that they can achieve good results in all their activities this year.”

Sports247 has concluded that badminton will not be part of this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, as hosts and organizers reduced the number of events to just 10 due to cost implications.
