The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, on Tuesday assured Nigerians that electricity supply would increase within two weeks.
He also apologized to citizens for the epileptic electricity situation currently occurring in his country.
Adelabu briefed journalists in Abuja on the state of the power sector since he took office in October 2023.
He said: “With the committee we have set up, input from gas suppliers, and the gas pipeline repair schedule, I can say that within two weeks we will start to see an improvement in electricity supply.
“Once repairs to gas lines, particularly those from Seplat, are completed and the committee ensures that gas companies fulfill their domestic supply obligations to power plants, timely payments will encourage gas suppliers and lead to increased electricity supply in the country.”

The minister also appealed to Nigerians to be patient in facing challenges in the power sector, saying that the ministry had done everything possible to address the issue.
“We would like to apologize to Nigerians for this temporary problem, which has caused hardship, especially during the dry season when the heat is intense and businesses, schools and homes are affected,” he said.
He attributed this challenge to the lack of gas supply to power plants, and noted that 75 percent of power plants depend on gas.
According to him, 25 percent of electricity generation comes from hydropower, and without a gas supply, power generation companies cannot operate so the turbines cannot operate.
“We don’t want to be in this situation, but there are factors outside our control.
“We’re not giving up. We’re working around the clock to get back on track to where we were in 2025, when we got credit for a job well done.
“If we are able to provide these services in 2025, then in 2026 we are determined to do more and do even better,” he said.
The minister added that electricity generation will increase in the coming weeks, with a target of 6,000 megawatts of electricity expected before the end of 2026.
