Nuj Loda DSS for a quick release of journalists – Thage

The union of the Nigeria of journalists (Nuj) praised the direction of security services, DSS for their prompt exit of two journalists, Ruth Marcus and Keshia Jang of Jay 101.9 FM, Jos, Plateau State, who have recently been arrested while covering the funeral of the deceased mother of the Congress All Progressives (APC), Professor Nentaga Yilwawwa.

On Sunday, national president, Nigeria Union of Journalists (Nuj), Alhassan Yahaya Abdullahi, said that the two journalists were arrested following the publication of a video relationship on social media that shows a clash between a religious and security agents of the funeral.

* Their arrest caused a profound concern within the journalistic community, since it represented a violation of the freedom of the press and the right of journalists to carry out their legitimate duties,* He said that, adding that,

*We are, however, encouraged by the decisive intervention of the general manager of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi, who ordered their immediate release, personally contacted Nuj to transmit his apologies and reiterated his directive to the DSS operators to carry out in -depth investigations before doing the arrests.

*This gesture reflects a positive and commendable change in the culture of our security institutions. The will of the DSS leadership to admit errors, apologize where necessary and commit to reforms is an important step in strengthening trust and public trust in the agency.*

Nuj urged the DSS to support this new approach and ensure that the rights of journalists and other citizens are always fully respected. Freedom of the press is the foundation of democracy and journalists must never be treated as opponents to carry out their constitutional duties.
