Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday urged the government at all levels in Nigeria to overcome the worsening exodus of health professionals by providing better working conditions, adequate remuneration, and a conducive environment for medical practice.
Obasanjo, who spoke at the Commissioning of Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital which had been renovated in Gusau, the state of Zamfara, condemned the mass migration trends of doctors and nurses Nigeria who were looking for better opportunities abroad.
Former president, a supporter of national development vocals and social justice, does not make small talk in highlighting the implications of the ongoing brain drainage in the health sector.
He noted that while infrastructure improvements, such as hospital renovations, should be praised, they would mean a little without a motivated and maintained labor.
He said: “We need all the personnel we can have because our hospital must be given.

. “You need the right environment, and that is repair and renovation, but you also need the right equipment and then personnel. If you don’t give them incentives, how do you hold it here?”
The 87 -year -old player was guided by Governor Dauda Lawal, who led the state in launching a newly renewed medical facility.
Obasanjo praised the state government for its commitment to revitalize the health sector and expressed hope that a better hospital would function as a blueprint for others throughout the country.
In recent years, thousands of health care workers have been trained with public funds, have left the country for Britain, Canada, Saudi Arabia, and the United States because of poor salaries, lack of medical equipment, insecurity, and fatigue.
Obasanjo’s comments echoed supporting sentiments and health experts who warned that if the current trend continues to be out of control, the Nigerian health system that has been tense may collapse.
