A former renowned Nigerian footballer, dr. Segun Odegbami, popularly called, Odegbami Mathematical, has identified sport as a tool that could be used to change the world for the better, in terms of units, discipline, peace and development between nations.
Odegbami declared him while delivering the 15th distinct public lesson of the Federal University, Lokoja, Wednesday.
The guru of sport in its lesson entitled: Sport has the power to change the world, as true, said that sports activities have had a positive impact on promoting politics, unity, peace and development all over the world.
According to him “sport has more value than a game in bringing together people in the world in the spirit of promoting unity and social change
“Sport is a global growth agent. He is also inspiring, uniform, friendship and tool for tension and conflict.
“Sport and media are inseparable as it improves the practice of media and education of people and commercial activities. On the other hand, the media use the power of sport to thrive
“Sport also acts as a catalyst for aptitude change all over the world, has a serious connection in the promotion of physical health and the healthiest environment”
He described sport as a tool for global struggle against illiteracy, hunger and poverty.
In his welcome speech, the deputy chancellor of the Federal University, Lokoja, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, reiterated his administration’s commitment to make knowledge progress, stimulate the intellectual speech and commit himself to issues of national and global relevance.
“In line with this commitment, we had the privilege of inviting eminent personalities and scholars, both from within and from the outside of Nigeria, to share their wealth of knowledge and experience with us.
“As academics, we recognize the transformative power of sports beyond the game of the game. Sport inspires, builds discipline and cultivates leadership, crucial values for individual and national development.
“In this light, today’s lesson, entitled” Sport has the power to change the world. How true is it? “It is both timely and relevant.
“His extraordinary successes, from the guide of Nigeria to Vittoria in the 1980 African Nations Cup to his dedication to cultivate young athletes through the International Sports Academy, make him an orator worthy on this important topic”
