Ogun Monarch swears the strongest campaign against cervical cancer, urges vaccination for girls for teenagers

The OLOWU of the Kingdom of Owu, OBA (Prof.) Saka Matemilola, has renewed its commitment to raise awareness of the prevention of cervical cancer, declaring that promoting human vaccination of the papillomavirus (HPV) among the girls is the key to safeguarding their future and guaranteeing safe motherhood.

Oba Matemilola made this known during a capacity construction program held in its palace in Oke-Ago Owu, Abokuta, State Ogun. The event was organized by Pathfinder International, Nigeria, in collaboration with the Ogun State Primary Health Care Development Board (Phcdb) and the health initiative of the Ogun family (Fio).

The monarch, which is also a mega champion of recognized HPV, described the campaign against cervical cancer as a cause dear to his heart. He praised the governments of the Federal State and Ogun, as well as a development and NGO partners, for their continuous efforts to eliminate cervical cancer in Nigeria.

“This formation is a commendable initiative. The importance and benefits of the human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) cannot be emphasized,” said Oba Matemilola. “The suffering, the loss of life and the financial burden imposes are devastating. And I and the leaders of this kingdom will intensify awareness campaigns to encourage parents and caregivers to vaccinate girls from the age of nine years.”

He invited all interested parties – families, community and institutions – to unite the forces in promoting access to the vaccine, which he underlined is essential to prevent deadly disease.

Representing the executive secretary of the PHCDB, dr. Elijah Ogunsola, During the event, dr. Salmot Sanni has revealed that the HPV vaccine has now been integrated into the Nigeria routine immunization program. He stressed that the vaccine is safe, effective, free and available in all government health structures throughout the state.

Dr. Sanni also praised the monarch for his constant support for public health and defense initiatives.

Likewise, the state coordinator of Pathfinder International, Emah in the upome, highlighted the goal of training – to deepen the understanding of the HPV and its vaccine and to exploit the real leadership in the mobilization of the community support for the prevention of cervical cancer.

The medical expert and sample of state HPV, dr. Rabiu Kushimo, expressed concern about the hesitation of the vaccine between parents, exhorting families to take immunization seriously. “Vaccination is not just a health decision; it’s a life -saving intervention,” he said.

Speaking also to the event, the official of state immunization, dr. Surajudeen Olayinka (represented by Mr. Akeem Adebari) and the educator of state health, Waheed ElenoGbede, has held safety, efficacy and global and national guidelines for the HPV vaccine, as well as the crucial role of traditional rulers regarding public health.

Training ended with a consensus on the need for prolonged collaboration between health authorities, real institutions and civil society to protect girls and women from preventable diseases such as cervical cancer.
