Okocha clarifies EPL over NPFL Comment

Okocha clarifies EPL over NPFL Comment – Latest Sports News In Nigeria

Former Super Eagles captain, Austin Okocha has made a statement clarifying a trending comment he made about his preference of the English Premier League over the Nigeria Premier Football League.

During an EPL trophy tour in Nairobi, last August, Okocha said he’ll rather watch foreign leagues than NPFL.

The statement wasn’t well received back home, and the former Nigerian midfielder received knocks from fans for his “unpatriotic” stance.

In a chat with BRL, Okocha clarified his position, insisting the league organizers must do everything possible to lift domestic football.

He then sighted insecurity as one of the problems the league organizers must address quickly.

“I said that out of anger, maybe also because I’m hurt that I’m back home but I can’t go (to the stadium) to watch a local league game.

“I would love to go and watch our league (matches). I would love to go and encourage the future players, but you know if I can’t feel comfortable to go and watch, then I can’t sweep that under the rug and pretend that things are okay.

“No things aren’t okay, we can do it, we just have to,” the 50 year-old former midfielder said.

Austin Okocha started his football career with Enugu Rangers before traveling to Germany.
