Former vice -president Yemi Osinbajo stressed that politics should be a tool to provide essential services to citizens rather than to serve personal interest.
On Sunday he made this statement as he offers a main speech at the Rotary International District 9141 conference held in Port Harcourt, in the state of spinners. The conference had the theme: “The magic of the connection: the imperative and the privilege of the service”.
Highlighting the fundamental responsibilities of the government, Osinbajo underlined the need for accessible health care, quality education and a solid social security system, which has described as fundamental rights of each Nigerian.
“Leadership in politics and governance must be oriented to the service. This is not only an imperative but a privilege,” he said.
Osinbajo cited the example of the implementation of the deceased chief OBAFEMI AWOLOWO of free basic education in the old western region as a model of impact leadership, observing that it was pursued despite significant financial constraints.
Representing his experience in modeling the All Progressive Congress (APC) manifesto in 2014, the former vice -president revealed that one of the main debates focused on the establishment of a strong social investment program, which later hidden initiatives such as the National and Commercial School feeding.
He also complained about the rooted corruption that afflicts Africa, stating that the continent is full of talent, but continues to suffer due to the subuse of its human capital.
By challenging the members of the elite, Osinbajo urged the introspection, asking if their successes were guided by a commitment to serve others.
He asked for a better tax discipline and the budget priorities, adding that the real measure of national progress lies in the way a country deals with its most vulnerable citizens.
“Politics must concern the people. When the leadership is disconnected from the service, we lose the soul of governance,” Osinbajo warned.
The observations of the former vice -president drew applause from the meeting, which included company leaders, public employees and civil society actors.
